Welcome to Avid Analog.

Curiosity is the beginning. Creation is the destination.

I’m a photographer, musician and enthusiastic collector of hobbies from the UK. Photography is the main event, but you’ll also find articles about songwriting, music production, making things, collecting things and whatever else happens to have barged its way into my brain that week.

I’m not an expert, and I’m not really trying to be. There are plenty of people on the internet who know more than I do about cameras, microphones, synthesisers and almost everything else I write about. This isn’t a masterclass. It’s a notebook.

One thing I’ve realised over the years is that I enjoy connecting ideas just as much as I enjoy learning them. A camera becomes a lesson in design. A song becomes a lesson in storytelling. A piece of technology becomes a way of thinking about creativity. The connections are often more interesting than the subjects themselves.

For years I was very good at collecting ideas and remarkably less good at turning them into finished things. I’ve since come to the conclusion that ideas are only half the story. The other half is making something tangible from them. A photograph. A song. An article. A project. Something that didn’t exist yesterday.

You’ll notice I don’t use my real name here. That’s not because I’m in witness protection or secretly Batman. I simply wanted somewhere that felt like my own little corner of the internet, where I could write honestly, follow interesting rabbit holes and publish without overthinking every word. The work matters more than the author.

So this isn’t really a photography blog. Or a music blog. Or a technology blog. It’s a curiosity blog that just happens to contain a lot of cameras, guitars and the occasional completely unrelated obsession.

If any of that sounds familiar, pull up a chair. I hope you find something here that makes you think, inspires you to make something of your own or, at the very least, convinces you that buying another camera isn’t always the answer.

Thanks for stopping by.
